Rooftop terrace with benches and views of the hills

Lagoa da Conceição is the postcard view of central-eastern Florianópolis: a large lagoon surrounded by hills and dunes, with a historic village, bars, restaurants, water sports and quick access to Praia Mole, Joaquina and Barra da Lagoa beaches. From Trindade, it’s about 15 minutes by car, without traffic, and you can see the essentials in a day, although it’s worth coming back again and again.

In this guide: how to get there, things to do (Costa da Lagoa, the dunes, the lookout, Avenida das Rendeiras, water sports, nightlife) and how to plan your day.

What is Lagoa da Conceição?

Lagoa da Conceição is a brackish lagoon of about 20 km² (roughly 8 sq mi), stretching more than 13 km (8 mi) from north to south. It connects to the ocean through the Barra da Lagoa channel, almost 3 km long, used by fishing boats. Around it are neighborhoods with distinct personalities:

Area Vibe Best for
Centrinho da Lagoa (the small center) Shops, bars, craft fair, historic church Anyone who wants buzz and nightlife
Avenida das Rendeiras Waterfront restaurants, sports schools, access to the dunes Lunch with a view, kitesurfing, SUP, sandboarding
Canto da Lagoa Residential and quiet Paddling, a laid-back late afternoon
Costa da Lagoa Village with no car access Boat trip, hiking, seafood lunch
Barra da Lagoa Fishing village where the lagoon meets the sea Family beach day, the channel

The area has been settled for a long time: the parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, which gives the lagoon its name, was founded in 1750, and its church sits on high ground by the small center. The historic core of the old parish is protected by IPHAN (Brazil’s national heritage institute).

How to get there from Trindade

  • By car or ride-hailing app (~15 min without traffic). The road climbs Morro da Lagoa hill and comes down right into the small center. In summer, on weekends and in the late afternoon, traffic on the way down can be slow; leave early.
  • By bus. Trindade has the Trindade bus terminal (TITRI) and Lagoa has the Lagoa bus terminal (TILAG), which also serves Joaquina, Canto da Lagoa and Barra da Lagoa. Check up-to-date routes and schedules on the Florianópolis transit consortium’s app or website, because they change often.
  • Parking. This is the small center’s weak spot in summer. If you’re driving, arrive in the morning or consider taking a ride-hailing app instead.

Mirante da Lagoa (the lookout)

At the top of Morro da Lagoa, right on the way from Trindade, is the Mirante da Lagoa, with panoramic views of the lagoon, Avenida das Rendeiras, the dunes and Praia da Joaquina in the background. It’s worth stopping on the way there (morning light) or on the way back, around sunset. Be careful crossing the road and parking on the shoulder, which is narrow.

Costa da Lagoa: by boat or on foot

Costa da Lagoa is a traditional community on the western shore of the lagoon, with no car access. It’s the area’s classic outing.

By boat. Boats leave from the small center of Lagoa and stop at several numbered piers along the shore. The full trip takes about 40 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the stops. There’s also a shorter crossing from the lagoon boat terminal on the Rio Vermelho side, at the north end of the lagoon. Departures thin out in the late afternoon and in low season, so check the time of the last boat back before you set off.

On foot. The trail starts at Canto dos Araçás and follows the shore through Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) to the village. It’s about 7 km (4.3 mi) and roughly 3 hours, with rocky stretches and gentle climbs; wear closed-toe shoes and bring water. The most popular combo is to hike there and take the boat back. For more walks, see our guide to hiking trails in Florianópolis.

What to do there. Costa da Lagoa lives off fishing and tourism: a seafood lunch at the waterfront restaurants and a short walk, about 15 minutes, to the Costa da Lagoa waterfall, which is fuller after rainy days.

Dunes and sandboarding

Between Avenida das Rendeiras and Praia da Joaquina are the dunes of the Parque Municipal das Dunas da Lagoa da Conceição, the most traditional place in Florianópolis for sandboarding. Boards are for rent and lessons are available on site, and no experience is needed.

  • Go early or in the late afternoon: the white sand gets hot and reflects a lot of sun.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and sunglasses; the climb back up is tiring.
  • It’s a protected area: don’t step on the dune vegetation, and use the existing paths.

Avenida das Rendeiras

Avenida das Rendeiras runs along the eastern shore of the lagoon and links the small center to the road to Joaquina. Its name honors the lacemakers (rendeiras) of renda de bilro, a bobbin lace tradition brought by Azorean immigrants that lives on in pieces sold in the area. Along the avenue you’ll find restaurants with tables facing the water, schools and equipment rentals for water sports, and a promenade used for walking and running. Late afternoon, with the sun setting behind the hills, is the best time.

Water sports

The lagoon has wave-free water and frequent wind, a great combination for:

  • Windsurfing and kitesurfing: there are schools on Avenida das Rendeiras. If you’re a beginner, take lessons with an accredited school.
  • Stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking: rentals along the shore. For beginners, Canto da Lagoa is usually more sheltered. Paddling along the Barra channel is also popular.
  • Sailing: the calm water is also good for small sailboats.

Check the wind forecast before heading out. Strong winds change conditions a lot, especially in the middle of the lagoon.

Can you swim in the lagoon?

It depends on the spot and the week. Water quality in Lagoa da Conceição varies and there have been contamination episodes. IMA, Santa Catarina’s environmental agency, monitors sites in the lagoon and along the coast and publishes the results on its bathing water website. Check the latest report before going in; if you want guaranteed ocean swimming, Joaquina and Barra da Lagoa are just a few minutes away.

The small center, craft fair and nightlife

The centrinho da Lagoa (the small center) is the heart of the neighborhood: shops, cafés, ice cream parlors, bars and restaurants within a few blocks. On Praça Bento Silvério, next to the cultural center of the same name, there’s usually a craft fair on weekends.

At night, the small center and Avenida das Rendeiras form one of the liveliest nightlife hubs in Florianópolis, with live-music bars and nightclubs, especially in summer. To get back to Trindade late at night, take a ride-hailing app instead of driving: enforcement of the Lei Seca (Brazil’s zero-tolerance drunk-driving law) is strict, and the road down the hill is winding.

Quick tips

  • Avoid the summer rush: arrive before 9 am and head back before 5 pm on weekends.
  • Check the time of the last boat from Costa da Lagoa before you go.
  • Rainy day? The small center has cafés and restaurants, and there are more ideas in our guide to things to do in Florianópolis when it rains.
  • Stay in Lagoa or outside it? Lagoa is great if you want buzz, but the traffic over the hill takes its toll if you need to get downtown or to UFSC every day. Compare the areas in our guide on where to stay in Florianópolis.

Trindade as your base for Lagoa

Staying in Trindade gives you the best of both worlds: Lagoa da Conceição about 15 minutes away for day trips and nights out, and downtown also about 15 minutes away, without paying the price of the hill traffic every day. Floripa Studio Trindade is next to UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina), about 25 minutes from Praia Mole and Joaquina, with self check-in, a full kitchen and a supermarket in the building to stock up before or after your outing.
