Where to Stay in Florianópolis: Best Neighborhoods by Trip Type

Where to stay in Florianópolis depends on what you want from your trip. To see the whole island and get around easily, stay in a central area such as Trindade, downtown (Centro) or Lagoa da Conceição. To spend your days at the beach with as little travel as possible, pick a beach neighborhood such as Jurerê, Canasvieiras, Ingleses, Campeche or Barra da Lagoa, and accept that the rest of the island will be farther away.
This decision matters more in Floripa than in other beach destinations. Santa Catarina Island is big, has only a few main roads, and summer traffic is heavy. Choosing the wrong neighborhood can turn a 20-minute outing into an hour stuck in traffic.
Florianópolis neighborhoods at a glance

|---|---|---|---|
| Centro (downtown) | Urban and historic | Short trips, business, arriving by bus | No swimming beach |
| Trindade (UFSC area) | University and central | Seeing the whole island, UFSC/HU, remote work, long stays | No beach; the closest are ~25 min away |

| Santo Antônio de Lisboa | Azorean village on the bay | Couples, food, sunsets | Not a swimming beach |
Central areas: for seeing the whole island
Centro (downtown)
Centro is the historic heart of Florianópolis, with the Mercado Público (public market), Praça XV de Novembro, the Cathedral and views of the Ponte Hercílio Luz bridge. The Beira-Mar Norte waterfront is great for walking and cycling in the late afternoon.
- Pros: everything within walking distance, lots of restaurants and services, and the Rita Maria intercity bus station and the city bus terminal (TICEN) nearby.
- Cons: no swimming beach, and some streets get empty at night and on weekends.
Trindade and the UFSC area
Trindade sits in the middle of the island, between downtown and Lagoa da Conceição, and is home to the main campus of UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) and the University Hospital. It’s a residential university neighborhood with a busy shopping street, Rua Lauro Linhares, and Villa Romana Shopping (formerly Iguatemi) in neighboring Santa Mônica.
- Pros: central location. Without traffic, downtown and Lagoa da Conceição are about 15 minutes away, the airport about 20, and Praia Mole and Joaquina beaches about 25. The Trindade bus terminal (TITRI) connects the neighborhood to the rest of the city.
- Cons: no beach, and the neighborhood has less of a vacation feel than Lagoa or the north.
It’s the most sensible choice if you want to spend one day at a beach in the east, another in the south and another in the historic center. See our Trindade neighborhood guide.
Lagoa da Conceição
Lagoa da Conceição has restaurants, bars, the island’s best-known nightlife and water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding. It’s close to Joaquina, Praia Mole and Barra da Lagoa.
- Pros: laid-back atmosphere, lots of places to eat and go out, and the east-side beaches nearby.
- Cons: it can be noisy, and in summer the roads in and out of the neighborhood get very congested.
Beach neighborhoods: for staying close to the sand
Barra da Lagoa
A fishing village where the Lagoa channel meets the sea. It has Prainha da Barra, with calm water that’s good for kids, and an open beach with waves. It’s low-key, with seafood restaurants and a neighborhood feel.
Campeche
A long beach with white sand and views of Ilha do Campeche, a protected island with controlled visitor numbers that you reach by boat. The neighborhood is residential and quieter, good for walking and surfing. It’s in the south, closer to the airport but far from the north of the island.
Jurerê Internacional
A planned neighborhood with upscale homes, a calm sea and the best-known beach clubs in Florianópolis. It has excellent facilities, but prices are high and it’s in the north: about 40 minutes from Trindade without traffic.
Canasvieiras
One of the most touristy neighborhoods on the island, with a calm sea, lots of shops and accommodation at a range of prices. It’s known as the “Argentines’ beach” and also draws many Uruguayans, Chileans and Paraguayans. It’s packed in summer. Off-season it’s much quieter, and some businesses run at a slower pace.
Ingleses
A large, family-friendly beach in the northeast of the island, with plenty of facilities and places to stay. It works well for families who will spend most of their time at the beach. The trade-off is distance: from Trindade it’s about 45 minutes without traffic.
Santo Antônio de Lisboa
A village founded by Azorean settlers on the north bay, with old colonial houses, seafood restaurants, oysters and one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island. It’s not a swimming beach, but it’s a great base for couples looking for peace and quiet and good food.
How to choose: questions that settle it
Are you renting a car? With a car, any neighborhood works, but the summer traffic is still there. Without a car, downtown and Trindade are the most practical, thanks to the number of bus lines and the shorter ride-hailing trips.
How many days are you staying? On a 3- to 5-day trip, a central base lets you fit in more outings. For a one- or two-week beach vacation, a beach neighborhood makes more sense.
When are you going? Between December and Carnival, the beach neighborhoods fill up, prices rise and the access roads get congested. Off-season, the central neighborhoods keep running as usual, while parts of the north of the island slow down. See the best time to visit Florianópolis.
Will you be working or studying? Prioritize fast internet, a work desk and services within walking distance. Trindade is usually the most practical choice. See our guide Florianópolis for digital nomads.
Tips for booking your accommodation
- Check the map before the photos. “Near the beach” can mean a 2- or a 20-minute walk. Check the actual route on the map.
- Confirm whether there’s a garage and whether it costs extra. In beach neighborhoods, parking in summer is tough.
- Air conditioning is essential in summer, which is hot and humid.
- In high season, book early, especially for New Year’s Eve (Réveillon) and Carnival.
- For stays of a week or more, compare the total price after discounts. See our guide to monthly rentals in Florianópolis.
Why Trindade is a good base for exploring Florianópolis
If you want to see as much of the island as possible without spending your trip in the car, staying in the middle is the most efficient strategy. Floripa Studio Trindade is in the Viva Trindade complex, next to UFSC and across from HU, with an Angeloni supermarket, a pharmacy and a food court on the ground floor of the building. The studio sleeps up to 2, with 800 Mbps Wi-Fi, a work desk, a full kitchen and self check-in, and offers a 10% weekly and 15% monthly discount. From there, Lagoa da Conceição and downtown are about 15 minutes away, and Praia Mole and Joaquina about 25, without traffic.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best neighborhood to stay in Florianópolis for a first visit?
For a first visit, the best choice is usually a central area such as Trindade, downtown (Centro) or Lagoa da Conceição. From there you can reach the beaches in the east, north and south, plus the historic center, without crossing the whole island every day.
Where should I stay in Florianópolis without a car?
Without a car, go for downtown or Trindade, which have shops within walking distance, bus terminals (TICEN and TITRI) and shorter ride-hailing trips to almost everywhere. Lagoa da Conceição also works, but traffic getting out of it in summer is heavy.
What is the best area of Florianópolis for families with kids?
The northern beaches, such as Jurerê, Canasvieiras and Ingleses, have calmer water and plenty of facilities, which families like. In the east, Prainha da Barra da Lagoa also has calm water and is good for kids.
Is it worth staying in the north of the island?
It is if you plan to spend most of your time at the beach. But the north is far from the south and east of the island: from Trindade to Jurerê Internacional it's about 40 minutes without traffic, and in summer the access roads get congested.
Where should I stay in Florianópolis for nightlife?
Lagoa da Conceição is the neighborhood best known for nightlife, with bars and restaurants in its small center. Jurerê Internacional is home to the beach clubs, and Trindade has student bars during the academic year.
