Florianópolis for Digital Nomads: A Guide to Working Remotely on the Island

· Updated · 3 min read

Bright living area with a large window, sofa and work desk

Florianópolis is one of the most popular destinations in Brazil for remote workers and digital nomads. The city has a strong tech hub, sometimes called “Silicon Island” (Ilha do Silício), nature all around, a high quality of life and a large community of tech professionals, students and foreigners.

This guide covers what’s worth knowing before spending a few weeks or months working on the island.

Choosing a neighborhood

The island is big and traffic can be slow, so your neighborhood shapes your routine.

  • Trindade and surroundings: central, near UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina), with plenty of services, cafés and public transportation. A good base if you want convenience during the week and beaches on the weekend.
  • Lagoa da Conceição: nightlife, water sports and a laid-back vibe. It can be noisy, and traffic getting out of the area is heavy in summer.
  • Downtown and Beira-Mar Norte: urban, walkable, with a great waterfront for walking.
  • Campeche and the south of the island: quieter and close to the beach, but farther from the rest of the city.
  • North of the island (Jurerê, Santo Antônio): beautiful and calm, but far away if you need to get around the city.

Internet

In the central neighborhoods, fiber internet is common and speeds are usually good. Even so, check the speed before you book: not every listing states it, and the difference between 50 and 500 Mbps matters for video calls and large uploads.

Get a mobile data plan as a backup. Prepaid SIM cards from the major carriers are easy to buy and activate.

Time zone

Florianópolis is on Brasília time (UTC−3). If you work with North America, meetings tend to fall in the late afternoon or evening. With Europe, in the morning.

Weather: when to go

  • Summer (December to March): hot, crowded beaches, heavy traffic and higher prices.
  • Fall (April and May): many consider it the best time, with sunny days, still-pleasant sea temperatures and fewer crowds.
  • Winter (June to August): cooler, damper days, great for focusing on work, and lower prices.
  • Spring (September to November): the weather warms up again and the city is still quiet.

A work routine in Trindade

Living in Trindade for a few weeks is easy because the neighborhood works like a small college town: cafés, pay-by-weight lunch restaurants, gyms, grocery stores and laundromats all nearby.

When you need a break, Lagoa da Conceição is about 15 minutes away and the east-side beaches less than half an hour. See the beaches near Trindade.

A studio designed for remote work

Floripa Studio Trindade is set up for working from home:

  • 800 Mbps Wi-Fi.
  • A large desk with a comfortable chair, next to the window.
  • Study room and gym in the building.
  • Supermarket, pharmacy, cafés and food court on the ground floor.
  • Washer-dryer and a full kitchen for long stays.
  • 10% weekly and 15% monthly discount.
